The full-fledged Department of Psychiatric Nursing was started in the year 1998 to introduce training programmes in the field of Psychiatric Nursing. In 2001, the Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing (DPN) was started under the Nursing Council of India and State Nursing Council. In 2007, the M. Sc Nursing (Psychiatric Nursing) course was introduced for the first time in the NER of India under Gauhati University. The Department also conducts teaching and clinical programmes for students coming for exposure posting from more than 20 nursing institutions across the country. Visiting faculties are also invited to take classes for the students. In recognition to the academic pursuit in the area of nursing, Mrs. Arunjyoti Baruah, HOD received the Florence Nightingale Award from the President of India in 2009. Clinical activities of the Department includes individual and group psycho-education, Pre-discharge, individual and family counselling, self-care management, skill training, behavioural nursing intervention, nursing care review and nursing audit. The staff and students also attend to the regular outreach camps of the Institute. Department organizes and conducts school mental health programmes as part of community mental health nursing activity.
